Bank walls get green

As someone who appreciates innovation and all things “green,” I had to share PNC Bank’s most recent project – a 2,380-foot living green wall installed on one side of its Pennsylvania headquarters.  The wall is composed of more than 15,000 plants, strategically placed to create a PNC-branded work of art.

In addition to drawing a good bit of publicity for the bank, the green wall also provides natural insulation to the building itself.  PNC reports that the green wall is to thank for the south-facing wall being 25% cooler than the other walls of the same building.  And the green wall does benefit the community as well.  Green Living Technologies, who designed the wall, estimated that each of the approximately 600 panels on the green wall can offset the carbon output of one person a day.

At approximately $125 a square foot, a living green wall may not be in every business’ budget, but it’s certainly inspirational.  Think about planting a garden (the kind that grows in the ground) to spruce up the local park, or painting a mural to revive a lackluster area of town.  Businesses that support their community are much more likely to get it in return.
