In this day and age, where Michael Jackson was buried in a 14 karat gold plated, custom casket that cost somewhere around $25,000, we know it isn’t cheap to die. The average cost for a wood casket can set you or your loved ones back between $1,500 to $4,000 and a metal coffin somewhere between $1,000 and $7,000, of course all depending on the options or bells ‘n whistles that are included. So, I suppose being able to purchase your “final resting bed” at a discount price should be of some comfort … but for me, it’s not. I would “roll over in my grave” if I knew my family had buried me in a casket from Walmart! Yes, I’m a Walmart snob and yes, I love the emails that come to me with pictures of the “People of Walmart”.
But let’s say I decide to purchase a casket from Walmart (just saying), “Does it require assembly? Will it last a lifetime? Keep out the worms? Not a pretty thought should it come to that. In short, the image that accompanies Walmart might not be the right brand for this market. Although times are tough and everyone wants a deal, let’s be real, the person who will unfortunately be using this product won’t care or know, right?
One last thing, for those of you who are morbid (you know who you are) and feel the need to go see one in person – you can’t … yet. Currently, Walmart’s “Mom or Dad Remembered” steel casket sells for the “Every Day Low Price” of $895 and is only online. But hey, if you’re one of those that like to plan ahead, Walmart is allowing customers to pay over a period of 12 months, interest free! Now that’s a deal!
