Snagging a Job in the Biz

With graduation quickly approaching, hundreds of hopefuls will soon be pounding the pavement in search of the perfect job. But it can be tough competition out there, especially with the increasing popularity of degrees in the Communication field. So, what’s the key to snagging a job in the biz? Here are some Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to the search:

*(Don’t be fooled – these rules apply to internships too!)

DO

  • Your homework (and no, we’re not talking research papers). Get to know the company through their website, blog and other social media networks.
  • Blow ’em away with your resume. List your most applicable attributes – in one page please!
  • Dress the part. Go ahead – throw on those shiny shoes. Dress for the job you want.
  • Send thank you cards after interviews or meetings. No need to disappear.

DON’T

  • Stalk your potential employer. Obsessive calls and emails are, well … just obsessive. (Think: Swingers movie).
  • Wear something that draws more attention than you do. Remember that Tide commercial?
  • Embellish your resume. Or include multiple pages of “experience” dating back to your days in Eagle Scouts. Also, feel free to omit “creative touches” like purple ink and scented paper (yes, we’ve seen it all).
  • Burn any bridges. You never know where a network will lead you.

Thanks for the tips! They’re very much appreciated. I would just like to add to them: “Build Your Online Persona.” Just like students research their potential employers, employers will be researching us. Make sure they’re able to find something good! If you haven’t already update your website, blog, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

    Hey, Ms. Blair!

Did some snooping and found the Kidd Group site. Many thanks for a good FMPA shoot this week! Truly, truly enjoyable!

I thought I’d also say thanks on the job search tips… good for any industry!

    Thanks again!
