Whether you’re the new hire in an office, or even interning for a semester, being the new kid (or Kidd) in the office is not always an easy feat. As the new Kidd over here in PR land, I offer a tip for the rest of you newbies that I pulled from my days in Kindergarten: Share your candy.
By simply putting a candy jar in your office, co-workers will be encouraged to make that extra effort and stop by to chat for a second….while they steal a handful of goodies. This is especially great for those who might be a little shy or overwhelmed by fitting into a new place.
I put a jar of my personal favorites – Everlasting Gobstoppers – on my desk with great results:
Pros:
- Meeting your co-workers: Almost everyone in the office, including the interns have taken a trip to meet me and eat some candy.
- Easy introductions: Pop the candy jar and the conversations just start flowing.
- Candy: A little sugar rush never hurt anyone.
Cons:
- Financial: Once you’re known as the office candy queen (or king) people may come to expect the joy that your candy jar will bring and will be disappointed if it’s not always there. Of course you can always buy in bulk.
- Cavities: No one likes a trip to the dentist.
- Weight gain: It takes a strong willed person to keep a large jar of tasty candies in sight without a little over-indulgence.
- Bacteria: It might be wise to offer up some hand sanitizer to those who frequent your candy jar. Or choose candies that are individually wrapped.
Thank you for adding the hand sanitizer next to the candy jar. 🙂
