Life is Short. Like What You Do.

I was just listening to my weekly podcast from the Moth (Click to listen.  Warning: mature language) and it really got me thinking.  You work 8 hours a day, well most of us do, so you better make sure you enjoy what you do.

Remember those scholastic tests in school in which you were supposed to fill out a series of questions and the results would tell you what career you’re best suited for?

(Office Space) “Our high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you’d do if you had a million dollars and you didn’t have to work. And invariably what you’d say was supposed to be your career. So, if you wanted to fix old cars then you’re supposed to be an auto mechanic.“.

Most of us don’t have the luxury of choosing the place were we work, but what we can do is make a plan to achieve what we really want to do.    Find out as much as you can about your new career.  There is so much information on just about anything  you can imagine on the web.  There are plenty of blogs and tutorials to get you started in the right direction.  A lot of companies are very receptive to informational interviews.  These are basically information finding visits to find out more about the company and what they do and how they do it.  Of course if doesn’t hurt to bring along some of your own work just in case the opportunity presents itself.  If not, some good information from working professionals never hurt.  It’s always nice to have a goal in mind and know what you’re working toward.

Luckily I’ve wanted to be an artist/designer since I can remember.  Okay so I really wanted to be a rock star but designer was always a very close second.  Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Great post! If I had a million dollars, I would travel the world. Now how do I find a job where I can do that?
