How Music Influences Design

An aspect I really enjoy about being a designer is being able to listen to music all day!  I’m kind of a music junky and I can’t help but be influenced by what I’m listening to while working on design projects.  Early in the idea brainstorming, I try to fit a style of music to the design.  I try to find a song or a genre of music that could be the soundtrack to the layout.  When designing for the web, I can actually add the music as an element of the design.  That’s a big part of what attracted me to using Flash for web development.

Here are some examples of songs I’ve used as starting points and what the finished product ended up being…

Song: Squirrel Nut Zippers  / Anything But Love (mp3)

Song: Steppenwolf – Born To Be Wild (mp3)

Song: The Road Not Taken / Bruce Hornsby (mp3)

It’s interesting to get a perspective of what other people in the office are listening to.  That’s where the idea of the Kidd Mix Tape came from.  Each season I ask everyone to submit a song.  When played back to back they’re as diverse as the people in the office are.

Warning: Shameless Plug! I also enjoy making music as well as listening to it.  My band has is releasing a 5 song EP on June 5th.  Check out some songs at http://www.imnotapilot.com.  Thanks!
