'Doh' play with matches

Chainsaws, knives, razors and matches are generally not considered appropriate toys for children. In fact, I recall my mother specifically mentioning that these particular items were off-limits.

So it may come as a bit of a shock that a new Singapore-based advertising campaign is taking a spin on the adage “don’t play with matches” to advertise a product for children. The campaign features a series of print ads featuring Play-Doh versions of hazardous items with the tagline “Safe no matter what you make.”

The campaign, found in the August issue of Navigator magazine, has people talking about the controversy. But, is it really all that controversial? It is just Play-Doh after all.

In fact, I think it’s a bit of genius branding. And a much better buzz-worthy item than the 50th anniversary Play-Doh perfume (did anyone actually purchase that?)
