Closet = Skeletons or Shoes?

Quick, what word comes to mind when I say, “hot?” How about, “tape?” What about “blueberry?” There are several word association sites that can be very helpful to creatives or will inspire those that need an extra push while brainstorming. Try the Edinburgh Associative Thesaurus or a visual form called Visuwords.

How do they know what words go with which? You tell them. It’s a fun exercise that many of us have done, but now it’s added up and tracked online. Google (of course) is trying some strange version of this in their lab called Sets. According to www.wordassociation.org the top ten most commonly entered user responses are, in order: “me“, “sex“, “you“, “water“, “dog“, “down“, “man“, “cat“, “good“, “love“. This site let’s you word associate all day long – and trust me it can be addictive. I answered “closet” to both words “shoes” and “skeletons” … what does that say about me?!
